Kim McElroy

I was born in 1966, under the powerful influence of the year of the Fire Horse, a rare sign in the Chinese calendar occurring only once every 60 years. Perhaps this explains my lifelong quest to paint horses.

As a child, I imagined I was a horse, and later turned to drawing them as a way to express my dreams. The inner world I created of horses was much more complex and emotional than the outer reality I discovered at riding stables. Though I never owned a horse until the age of 30, my intuitive understanding of their nature went beyond physical proximity. In 1987, I started a business called “The Fire Horse”, with my partner and mother, Kay on Bainbridge Island, Washington. We traveled together to horse events and trade shows, and private and gallery showings. I owe a lot of my early success to my mother’s faith in the power of my art, and her support and commitment.

Now under the name, Spirit of Horse Gallery, I sell my prints, originals, and commissioned portraits on my website The internet has allowed me to focus on my artwork and connect with people who seem to magically find my work in the world.

In creating my art, I seek to connect with the spiritual nature of the horse in order to express the horse’s entire being rather than just a likeness. My artistic styles include vivid horse portraits, dynamic paintings of the essence of horses, and spirit horses revealed in forces of nature. I have always sought an intuitive understanding of the sentience of horses, and my paintings invite the viewer to experience their own personal encounters.

Pastels allow me to capture the elements of the horse, which are both powerful and soft, tangible and fleeting. The intent of my art is to express the power and beauty of the horse’s form… yet more than that, I seek to portray a timeless glimpse of its soul.
