DESCRIPTION

The pear originated in Europe and North Africa around the Mediterranean Sea. The pear is an irresistible fruit, with a peculiar texture derived from grit-cells. Pears are one of two dozen plants which have been under cultivation for more than 4,000 years. The Romans especially loved pears; their records from 2,000 years ago described over 40 varieties. Early settlers brought seed to America and planted seedling orchards. From these seedling trees, hundreds of varieties suited to many regions have been selected. The variety pictured here is a Bosc pear.

In its natural state the pear is an upright tree with a long, straight trunk. It can be over 60 feet tall and is long-lived, with very strong, durable and finely grained timber.
