Redwood Bookmark

Description

Part of the reason a redwood lives so long lies in the protective bark whick may be a foot thick!  The bark and wood also contain chemicals that prevent damage by nsects and fungi.  In the distant past redwoods grew over most of the Northern Hemisphere.  Climatic changes dramatically reduced their range to within 30 miles of the Pacific Ocean.  These are the tallest trees in the world growing over 350 feet.  Perhaps their biggest threat is their usefulness to humans as lumber.
