Description

Settlers brought the honey bee to North America in the 17th century.  Honey bees live in hives in hollow trees as well as hives kept by beekeepers.  Worker bees visit flowers of many kinds in meadows, open woods and gardens.

Apple trees are unable to self-pollinate and therefore need insect pollination, primarily performed by bees, to bring pollen from other apple trees.  Orchardists depend on the pollination services of honey bees to produce a successful crop.
