Description

The downy woodpecker is the smallest, tamest, and most abundant of the eastern woodpeckers.  Males are distinguished from females by a bright red patch on the back of the head.  Active and sprightly are the back and forth motions of the downy woodpecker as it spirally ascends the entire circumference of the tree, giving occasional raps on the bark.  A sharp bill allows the bird to glean insects from the bark of trees and to excavate holes for itself.  The tail feathers serve as a rigid support while the woodpecker hitches its way up trees.  Mated pairs of downy woodpeckers remain together throughout the year.  They roam through the winter woods in the company of mixed flocks of chickadees. nuthatches, creepers and kinglets.
