Inside Cover DESCRIPTION

As members of the Corvid family which includes the jays, magpies and ravens, crows are considered to be among the most adaptable birds in the world. Because of their coal black plumage, large size, harsh garrulous notes and frequent appearance in the open they are one of our best-known American birds. Unfortunately the crow has a questionable record as far as its relations to humans is concerned. In spite of persecution, Crows have been able to outwit their human adversaries by their unusual intelligence.

Crows are omnivores, they eat whatever is available to them including insects, small amphibians and snakes, earthworms, eggs and nesting birds and more. They also scavenge carrion and eat wild and cultivated fruits and vegetables.

Crows have great versatility in their voice with an interesting repertoire of calls and notes. They have superior imitative facilities; captive crows have an amazing aptitude for learning new calls.

Crows and ravens are part of many legends and mythologies. They are seen as omens, messengers and magical representations of unseen forces and spiritual strength. They are portrayed as sly and cunning and are the embodiment of a trickster spirit.
