Back of Card DESCRIPTION

The Atlantic Ridley, smallest of the sea turtles, ranges from the Gulf of Mexico to Nova Scotia and across Europe. Its only nesting beaches are on the Gulf of Mexico just north of Tampico. There, in a single day, as many as 40,000 nesting females have crowded the beach. This species is currently highly endangered as a consequence of egg robbing, slaughter of females for food, and drowning in shrimp nets. Females come ashore 2-3 times a season to lay a hundred or more spherical, leathery-shelled eggs in a deep nest dug with the hind feet. Hatchlings weighing less than an ounce scamper down to the nurturing sea as they run through a gauntlet of predators.

Turtles have long symbolized longevity and motherhood. They move slowly, knowing that they have all the time in the world. Turtles are a symbol of Mother Earth, a reminder that she provides all we need.
